On 21 January 2026, Pro Sinti and Roma e.V. presented its new project “Gemeinsam Stark! – Mobile Counselling in the Districts of Freiburg, Emmendingen and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald” to a broad audience. Nearly 40 participants from the communities, public authorities, professional services, civil society and politics attended the event and used the opportunity for information, exchange and networking.
At the beginning of the event, Natascha Hofmann, Deputy Chair of Pro Sinti and Roma e.V., welcomed the participants and provided an overview of the association’s work. This was followed by presentations from project staff members Samira Bazm Ara and Rebecca Spittel, who introduced the new project “Gemeinsam Stark!”.
The aim of the project “Gemeinsam Stark – Mobile Counselling” is to strengthen the equal participation of Sintizze and Romnja. A particular focus is placed on Sintizze and Romnja with disabilities or chronic illnesses. The project offers mobile, low-threshold support services in everyday life and works structurally to reduce barriers within public authorities, the healthcare system and society as a whole. The project is funded by Aktion Mensch and has a duration of three years.
As the project staff emphasized, “Gemeinsam Stark” builds on the previous experience of Pro Sinti and Roma e.V. Access to essential services and full social participation remains difficult for many Sintizze and Romnja. In medical care, social security systems and other support services, those seeking advice frequently encounter prejudice, discrimination and racism. Sintizze and Romnja with disabilities are doubly affected by discrimination due to ableism — the devaluation of people based on disabilities. Within the framework of the project, low-threshold counselling is provided, and when necessary, individuals are accompanied to important appointments or medical visits. Through workshops on empowerment and rights within the healthcare system, those seeking advice are strengthened, while awareness-raising and educational activities address professionals and public authorities. In this context, the project staff highlighted the importance of networking and strong regional networks.
Following the presentation of the mobile counselling service, Natascha Hofmann informed participants about other fields of activity of Pro Sinti and Roma e.V. She referred to the social counselling services in other parts of Baden-Württemberg as well as the community-based counselling operating statewide.
The second part of the event provided ample space for questions, feedback and open exchange. Participants made active use of this opportunity to discuss points of connection for future cooperation. There was strong interest in the project and in the perspectives that the mobile counselling service opens up for the region.
Over drinks and snacks, the event concluded in an open and appreciative atmosphere. Many conversations continued informally, new contacts were made and existing networks were strengthened. The event thus marked a successful starting point for the project and laid an important foundation for further cooperation in the region.
Pro Sinti and Roma e.V. would like to thank all participants for attending, for their interest and support, and looks forward to continued collaboration.
